Denver Central Library - Michael Graves Architecture & Desig

Once the citizens of Denver decided to save the 1950s modernist library designed by Burnham Hoyt and expand it, the City and County held a design competition to choose the architect. Since the original building facing Civic Center Park is modest in size and character and the expansion would be three times its size, MGA&D designed the addition. In 1990, the city of Denver was in desperate need of a new library, after their original one was condemned in 1953. After voting for a $91 million bond to add onto the Fisher and Fisher/Burnham Hoyt building, the City of Denver commissioned Michael Graves to design a new one. Designed in collaboration with Denver firm Klipp Colussy Jenks Debois.
